IMPACT’s Safety Trained Supervisor Construction® (STSC) Certification Program

The STSC® certification is a professional credential for ironworker members, including journeymen, foremen, superintendents and signatory contractor management personnel, who have responsibilities for maintaining safe conditions and practices on construction jobsites. This program is offered by the Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP) and administered through IMPACT.

To determine whether you are eligible to become certified as an STSC® and to utilize IMPACT’s STSC program, follow the steps below. You must complete steps 1–5 to participate in an IMPACT STSC® training and examination course.

Step 1: To participate in IMPACT’s program, you must meet specific eligibility criteria:

• Ironworkers must receive written confirmation from your local union business manager that you are in good standing and a suitable candidate for the STSC® certification
• Contractor personnel must currently be employed by an ironworker signatory contractor and have a letter from your employer verifying your employment
Also, in order to be eligible to become certified as an STSC®, you must meet the following training and experience criteria:
• You must have completed 30 hours of safety training, AND
• You must have at least four total years of construction work experience (full or part time), OR
• You must have at least two years of construction work experience as a supervisor

Step 2: As part of the STSC® certification process, you will be required to submit information to the Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP) about your safety training, work history and personal background. A criminal background review is performed by BCSP as part of the STSC® application process. Applicants are required to provide disclosure of:

• All felony convictions
• All misdemeanor convictions within the past five years (Minor traffic violations and petty offenses DO NOT have to be reported)
• Any record of unethical behavior
• Information related to having a professional license or certification denied, suspended or revoked for reasons other than not meeting qualifications, failure of examination or failure to pay renewal fees

Step 3: Register for an STSC® Group Training Course at The Group Training Course is designed to help you prepare to take the STSC® examination as part of a group exam or at a testing center. NOTE: You must complete steps 3, 4 and 5 in order to register for the training course (step 3), apply for the exam, including application fee (step 4) and pay the exam fee (step 5).

Step 4: Apply for the STSC® certification on the BCSP website. A link to the site is available on the IMPACT STSC program page at Make sure you are properly linked to the sponsor (the local union sponsoring the event) before paying the application fee online, or you can call Janey Morton (217-359-9263 Ext. 3903) to pay over the phone. 

Step 5: If your application is approved, you will receive a notification that you are eligible to take the STSC® exam. You must pay an exam fee online in order to be authorized to take the exam.

Step 7: Take and pass the STSC® exam as part of a group exam or at a Pearson VUE testing center. To find a Pearson VUE testing center, go to 

Step 8: Upon passing the exam, you will receive a notice to pay the prorated renewal fee for the year. You must also pay an annual renewal fee of $65. In your 5th year of certification, you will be required to recertify.

Step 9: Record your STSC® certification with your local union training coordinator.

• Submit to your local union training coordinator a copy of the certificate sent by BCSP verifying that you passed the exam
• The local union training coordinator will scan your certificate into their computer system
• The coordinator will ensure that the certificate is recorded in the Ironworker Apprentice Tracking System (IWATS) so that it will appear on the Iron Worker membership card
