The Iron Workers Union has borne the brunt of economic collapse and fiscal policy inaction from Congress over the past three years. Between 2009 and 2010, we lost 40 million man hours—the equivalent of 20,000 full-time jobs.
Last night, the President outlined a comprehensive plan to help revive the construction industry—indeed all industries—for American workers, the American Jobs Act. He challenged Congress to address the real crisis, jobs, affecting working families and to “pass this bill.” His proposal includes much-needed investments in small business, education, unemployment insurance—for both veterans and American workers—and, most importantly, infrastructure.
The proud members of the Iron Workers Union have long said that the key to a broad economic recovery are greater investments in infrastructure and a solid manufacturing base here in the United States. President Obama’s proposal to pour more funding into “roads, rail, airports and waterways while putting hundreds of thousands of workers back on the job” provides great promise as a beginning to a vital American revival in transportation, construction and manufacturing industries.
For 115 years, the proud members of the Iron Workers Union have built highways, high-speed rail and subway lines, skyscrapers and bridges spanning mile-wide rivers. We are ready and willing to stand with our Brothers and Sisters around the country as we all work to keep America great, to proudly support the American Jobs Act and to look forward to a better future. We call on our members to stand with the President and demand that their elected representatives act like Ironworkers and take care of the business of rebuilding America.
